The Aurora Aragon Quezon House

More than a month ago, I noticed that the Aurora Aragon-Quezon house on the corner of San Luis and Rizal St. was missing. It was demolished in less than 2 days. Then immediately after, construction started in the area. Now, the new house is almost finished. It’s supposed to be a replica of the Aragon House, or the house of Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon. I have no idea how the real Aragon house looked like but I think it’s not as grand as this one. I think the plan is to open it during the Phil-Spanish Friendship Day on June 30. It’s interesting to note that during the Spanish period, the owner of the house, Pedro Agaron, was imprisoned by the Spanish and died at captivity. But that was a long time ago. Now we’re friends. But we should never forget.

Some pictures to go with yesterday’s news about the Quadricentennial of Evangelization of Baler. The celebration was highlighted with a procession and a pontifical mass presided by Prelature of Infanta Bishop Rolando Tria Tirona. The same celebration will be held at Casiguran on June 13.

Aurora to Host 2009 Mutya ng Pilipinas, Announces Angara

Angara today announced that his hometown province, Aurora, will host the 2009 Mutya ng Pilipinas – one of the most prestigious beauty pageant in the Philippines. “This momentous event will feature two distinct beauties which bring pride to the Philippines – the Filipina beauty and the beauty of nature and environment as captured by the province of Aurora,” said Angara who is a proud son of Baler Aurora. He added, “Aside from being blessed with abundant tourist attractions – from its natural attractions including picturesque waterfalls, lush greenery on mountainsides, and panoramic beaches, to various activities which includes surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, mountain climbing and trekking – Aurora and its people is proud to showcase its natural hospitality and warm welcome as we host the 2009 Mutya ng Pilipinas.”

from by Manny Galvez: Casiguran airport to be upgraded

The P157-million airport in this town, which is now undergoing construction, will be further upgraded into an international airport at an additional cost of P100 million.

Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo told The STAR that the airport, initially planned as a domestic airport, would become an international airport with a longer runway able to serve larger aircrafts that can travel to other destinations through connecting flights to other airports.

from CBCP News by Jason De Asis: Baler and Casiguran mark quadricentennial of evangelization

The 400 years of evangelization in this town will be celebrated on June 11, 2009 according to San Luis Obispo Parish (SLOP) priest Fr. Nilvon Co Villanueva.

A pontifical mass will be presided by Prelature of Infanta Bishop Rolando Tria Tirona together with 36 priests of the prelature at 3 o’clock in the afternoon at SLOP in Baler.

Also on June 13, 2009, the northern town of Casiguran shall also be commemorating the quadricentennial of its evangelization in time for its town fiesta in honor of its patron San Antonio de Padua.

Filipino-Español dia dela Amistad: Expulsar el Beredeman Way

You have to give it to the long-time band cooperative Beredeman Production for coming up with a regular barrage of rock events to showcase their local rock star talents. This time, one of the hardest rocking Pinoy ninja metal band Pentavia will be joining the riot, their first time in Baler. I hope they will also include that parke boy who do great original rap compositions.

The week-long Kalahi Summer Arts Workshop conducted on May 18-24 by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as part of the Baler 400 Celebration culminated on May 24 with a simple program and a display of the sail paintings created by artists from the Arts Association of the Philippines and local artists. The short program was graced by no other than NCCA Executive Director Cecille Guidote-Alvarez. The local government was represented by Baler Vice Mayor Pilot Bihasa and Mr. Jennings Grefalda who represented Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo.
