This year’s Mutya ng Pilipinas is now on its 41st year which dubbed as Mutya ng Pilipinas at Aurora Province – The Beauty Adventure in the Pacific. For the last two years, it was held on a prime eco-tourism destination such as Subic Freeport, Clark, Pampanga in 2007 and at Puerto Princesa City in Palawan last year.

In keeping up with its aim to promote beauty at its best…Mutya ng Pilipinas brings this year’s pageant to none other than our very own Province…AURORA..

Mutya ng Pilipinas started in the late 60s which has produced a great number of beauty queens who made a name in showbiz, modelling, business and even in politics…some of them switched to being sexy starlets and faded like a bubble…we see beauties come and go but what has remained constant is the emphasis and the interest of young women to join beauty contest…a stepping stone for a promising career or just an experience for the heck and for the feel of it!!

During the 70’s we’ve seen the likes of Alice Crisostomo…(mom of Mutya Laxa who herself became a beauty queen during the early 90’s) along with the late Rio Diaz, a popular model and Eat Bulaga TV host before she succumbed to big C.. Yehlen Catral who was a favorite leading lady of Comedy King Dolphy…one of Dolphy’s angels along with Carmi Martin during the late 80’s. Emma Yuhico who portrayed Flordeluna’s mom named Belinda…oh well…i really wanna commend my fantastic memory as i still have this impeccable account of those characters in my fave drama series before mexican telenovela has been coined (a top tearjerker during the 80’s which starred Janice de Belen, Herbert Bautista, Laurice Guillen and the late Dindo Fernando among others). Techie Agbayani who made a splash when her nude photos appeared in the German edition of Playboy magazine she has come full circle for being a good mother and she’s teaching a Psychology course in an exclusive school..Lorraine Schuck, a popular model and one of the founders of Carousel Production who had been a prime mover and brains of the Mutya ng Pilipinas tilt for a number of years. Mutya during that time selected candidates to represent the country in the Miss Asia Quest and Miss World. Mutya winners Lorraine Schuck and Peachy Veneracion founded Ms. Philippines Earth which selects a representative to Miss Earth contest held in Manila.

Some of the prominent figures who had established themselves as top caliber models during the 80’s were Carines Zaragoza, Bong Dimayacyac, Sherry Rose Byrne, Malou Apostol, and Lorna Legaspi. Aurora Sevilla has tried her hand at showbiz and Star Querubin has run for a councilor seat in Manila.

The 90’s had some popular names in showbizness such as Mutya Laxa, daughter of Toni Ferrer and half-sister of Maricel Laxa, Gemith Gemparo, Michelle Aldana who earned a niche in Viva Films produced movie “Segurista”, Sherilyn Reyes, one of the hosts of late afternoon QTV program MOM along with Lani Mercado and Manilyn Reynes, Maricel Morales, who had been a favorite leading lady of action stars like Lito Lapid and Ace Espinosa. Daisy Reyes has joined the Mutya first before she was crowned as a representative for Bb. Pilipinas-World title.

From year 2000 onwards there were the likes of Josephine Canonizado who also appeared in some TV shows, commercials and ads and got linked to a famous action star which escapes me at the moment. Darlene Carbungo, Anna Marie Morelos, and Loren Andre Burgos had been an active models of great named fashion designers in the country.

jonavi quiray

The reigning queen Jonavi Raisa Quiray from Puerto Princesa, Palawan hailed as the Mutya ng Pilipinas International, its just a coincidence perhaps when a hometown decision was handed out.

Jam Charish Libatog from Cebu City was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas-Tourism 2008 she epitomizes grace and elegance under a stressful…super hot afternoon.

mutya 2008
2008 Mutya Winners (From left to right) Quezon City’s Katrina Rigets (1st Runner-Up); Loren Andre Burgos from Southern California as Mutya ng Pilipinas Overseas Communities; Mutya ng Pilipinas International Jonavi Quiray (center); Cebu’s Jam Libotog, Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism Puerto Princesa and Southern Leytes’ Queency Bernales as (Second Runner-Up).

Three major titles are at stake : Mutya ng Pilipinas-International, Mutya ng Pilipinas-Tourism and Mutya ng Pilipinas-Overseas Communities. Major titlists will compete to international beauty pageants like Miss Asia Pacific-International, Miss
Tourism International, Tourism Queen of the Year, and Miss Intercontinental. Php 200,000 is at stake for both of the two top titles and Php 50,000 each for the runners-up.

The most anticipated grand coronation night will be held at the newly refurbished Juan C. Angara Sports Complex at Baler, Aurora, tomorrow night at 7:00 PM (hoping against hope that we wouldn’t be waiting for “eternity” and some stars to fall before the program starts) with a one week delayed telecast on August 16, 2009 also on a Sunday over TV5. A local CATV station managed by VM Pilot will possibly cover it live.

We are nonetheless promised of a modest seat outside the complex with two giant screens with a comfy outfit (bereft of a dress code with a signature terno designed by the country’s Ambassador of Fashion to the world aka Mama Renee Salud) and a super fashionable flip-flops to boot. You guys have to say a prayer to St. Claire first as in….now naa… yeah… it wouldn’t rain on their parade.

Some special awards were already handed out to candidate no.18 Sheryl Rose Guerrero of Aurora for Aurora Beauty Award, candidate no. 22 Rene Rosario McHugh of East Coast, USA for Ms. Photogenic Award on press presentation at Edsa Shangri-la.

During the Pre-Pageant Show hosted by Ms. Cristine Caballero, former mutya winner (who looks younger in person) held on August 6 at Baler Central School on a rainy Thursday Night. Candidate no. 26, Jacqueline Schubert bagged the Aurora Face of the Night. It was the only special award given as the most coveted Best In Swimsuit, Best in Gown featuring the designers competition showcasing “sabutan”, Best in Casual Attire, Ms. Talent, Ms. Congeniality…results and the most awaited Q & A portion would all gonna happen tomorrow…August 9, 2009.

congratulations to all winners! especially to candidate no.1 maski hindi siya nakakuha ng title, at least finalist. MORE POWER AURORA GOODLUCK. MABUHAY AURORA.
