‘Hanna’ now a tropical storm, threatens Luzon

Tropical depression “Hanna” has intensified into a tropical storm and is heading towards Central and Northern Luzon, the weather bureau said Friday.

The storm is expected at 60 kilometers west of Casiguran, Aurora or 60 kilometers north of Baler, Aurora by Saturday afternoon.

Aurora Hailed as Next Health Hub

BALER – Officials of the University of the Philippines (UP)-Manila have unveiled plans of setting up a satellite campus of its School of Health Sciences (SHS) in this capital town in a move seen to convert the province, situated 232 kms. north of Manila, into a health hub in northeastern Luzon and at the same time solve the dearth of health professionals in the countryside owing to the mass exodus of doctors and nurses for greener pastures abroad.

The proposed UPSHS-Baler campus, which will open in July 2008, will be the first UP specialized school on health in Luzon and is expected to cater to the health needs of people in the province and in the adjacent provinces of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino.

Angara urges gov’t to declare ‘state of emergency’ in 65 coconut-producing provinces

BALER, Aurora – Sen. Edgardo Angara on Saturday called on President Arroyo to immediately declare 65 coconut-producing provinces under a “state of emergency” to halt the massive infestation of coconut plantations.

Angara, chairman of the Senate committee on agriculture, told The STAR that Mrs. Arroyo should make the declaration so that emergency measures could be instituted to prevent the beetle infestation from further wreaking havoc on the coconut industry, on which 20 million Filipinos are dependent for their livelihood.

Tarlac-Aurora Highway Sought

Business groups in Central Luzon have linked up to push the government to build the Tarlac-Nueva Ecija-Aurora Expressway to transform the region’s eastern side into a gateway of trade, commerce and tourism through the Pacific Ocean route.

It starts from La Paz in Tarlac, goes on to the towns of Zaragoza and Sta. Rosa, up to Cabanatuan City and Pantabangan in Nueva Ecija.

From an interchange in Pantabangan, the options are to extend the road to Dingalan and to Baler, the capital town of Aurora.

Glenn Llamador from Aurora won Arnis Championship

Here’s another great news (via the comments page):

Glenn Llamador won another championship match in the recently concluded LSAI Singapore (Kilat Senjata) -Philippines Cup last July 2007. He bested all participants in the Live Cane Category. (Live cane means the arnis sticks are not padded). The competition also served as a tune-up fight for the LSAI Singapore Team in the upcoming World’s Tournament in Arnis.

Glen Llamador is from Dipaculao. He won a gold medal in arnis (anyo two-sticks team) together with Nathan Ben Dominguez & Peter Kelvin Celis in the 23rd South East Asian Games held in the Philippines on 2005. He graduated from Mucdol National High School and Mechanical Engineering from UP. He is also an officer of ROTC.

LUCENA CITY, Philippines -– A Catholic priest and advocate of the rights and protection of Agta natives in Sierra Madre has appealed to the military not to control the flow of food aid intended for malaria-stricken mountain settlers in Dingalan town, Aurora, 183 kilometers northeast of Manila.

Aurora named new economic zone

CASIGURAN, Aurora—President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has signed into a law Republic Act 9490 making Aurora province a special economic zone, Gov. Bellaflor Angara Castillo announced yesterday.

The new law, establishing the Aurora Special Economic Zone and Freeport Authority, is expected to spur trade and investment in the province which is considered one of the most depressed in the country.
