Mutya ng Pilipinas 2009

A Thank You Note from Sheryl Guerrero

Ms. Sheryl Guerrero
Ms. Sheryl Guerrero

To my beloved family, friends, and relatives,

Barely, I could not find enough words to express my sincerest gratitude to all of you who have been very supportive of me when I joined MUTYA NG PILIPINAS. From the bottom of my heart I THANK YOU ALL!!! Thank you for your sleepless nights voting for me online, thank you for all your unceasing prayers and thank you for just being there to boost me up.

Truthfully, I had a great time joining this once in a lifetime experience. I have learned so many things– things which are not part of my daily living; things that I could not imagine I was able to do and things which I have not thought of will be given to me to savor. People who are close to me and who know me personally can attest that I am really a private person. I would rather hide myself than to be out there in the public. I would rather cheer my friends performing on stage than doing the same in front of an audience. I would rather be in the backroom than in the limelight. Never in my dreams to become a beauty queen, the notion of wearing 5 inch- heels, posing in swimsuit wearing barely nothing, modeling, projecting in front of the camera, rehearsing for a dance number, smile here & there are totally not my stuff.

The typical Sheshe as what my family & friends call me would rather wear flats than high heels, would rather be pale than put some colors on my face, and would rather wear plain shirt than a designer gown. Before, I have never dreamed of becoming a beauty queen but having experienced this overwhelming episode of my life, I could really say that it was truly a pleasure and fulfillment for me as a woman and a gratitude to represent my province AURORA, to carry my surname GUERRERO, and to stand before the crowd and be called your MUTYA. I could say I had a great experience to remember throughout my life, an experience worth reminiscing and an experience worth sharing for. If there is ONE BIG THING that I learned and treasured most from joining Mutya that is… I have realized I am such a LUCKY person, not because of the awards I gathered but rather because I have people in my life who I never thought would be very much eager and give their heartfelt desire to support me. With all these things, what is more important to me is not the MUTYA title but rather, I the realization that with all the warm embraces, genuine smiles and prayers that you gave unselfishly, I am still a true Filipina Beauty Queen in your eyes.

BALER, Aurora – A 20-year-old Bicolana nurse was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas International 2009 early morning today in this capital town.

Jane Banares of Legazpi City, Albay, 5’7″, emerged as the surprise winner in the first-ever beauty contest she competed in, besting 35 other contestants in the pageant’s grand coronation night at the sweltering Dr. Juan C. Angara Sports Complex here. She also went home with the title best in long gown.

Jacqueline Schubert, 18, of Borbon-Cebu, the overwhelming crowd favorite, was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism while 23-year-old Ana Baladad of Texas was adjudged Mutya ng Pilipinas for Filipino Overseas Communities. Samantha East of Canada was chosen 1st runner-up while Jennielyn Natividad, a magna cum laude graduate of Quezon City, emerged as 2nd runner-up.

Banares (31-23-33), a daughter of a seaman, said she didn’t expect to win, it being only her first time to join the prestigious pageant. She earned the nod of the judges with her witty and calm reply to a question asking her to compare her home province Albay and Aurora.

Banares said that like Bicolanos, Aurorans are warm and lovable people with good food and with serene surroundings and natural attractions. Like a typical Bicolana, she admits being fond of chili.

The 5’6″ Schubert, an Economics graduate in Germany is a first-timer and the youngest daughter of couple Willie Schubert, a German and Lilibeth Durano, a distant relative of Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

Schubert (33-25.5-36.5), who drew the loudest round of applause during the coronation night, also emerged with three other awards : star of the night, best in swimsuit and best gown.

Baladad, who idolizes Precious Lara-Quigaman, said she didn’t expect to win and even asked a fellow contestant standing beside her if it was really her number which was called when the emcee hollered candidate no. 10 as winner of the Mutya ng Pilipinas for Filipino Overseas Communities title. “It took a while for me to realize I was the one called. It hasn’t really sunk in,” she recalled.

The 5’5″ Baladad (35-25-35) was previously crowned as Ms. Philippines Texas-Oklahoma 2003, Ms. Philippines-America 2004 and Ms. Asia-America Princess 2007. It was her fourth title in seven beauty contests she participated in.

She is taking up AB European Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University and previously took up history in Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Sen. Edgardo Angara, a native of this town graced the pageant with his younger sister and host Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo, also chairperson of the MPI executive committee, House Deputy Majority Leader Juan Edgardo Angara and Mayor Arthur Angara.

Renee Salud, managing director of the MPI and chairperson of the national screening committee for this year’s search, said the 2009 candidates were by far the best ever assembled by pageant organizers.

Aside from Angara-Castillo and Salud, the other members of the executive committee were Gigi Gomez, Mr. Jojo and Mrs. Nathalie Ong, Mr. and Mrs. Boy Tan, MPI president Roberto De Venecia and Lauro Amante.

Also on hand were MPI directors De Venecia, Amante, Alfonso Lim Jr., Ramona Lopez-Ty and Leandro Enriquez and lawyer Edward Castañeda, corporate secretary.

The board of judges were composed of Ms. International 2001 Margolzata “Gosia” Rozniecka, consul general Wilson Hugh, actor Alfred Vargas, ABS-CBN executive Elvira Angara, Fanny Serrano, Randy Ortiz, Jackie Aquino, Anna Marie Morelos, Nueva Ecija Vice Gov. Edward Thomas Joson and columnist Crispina Martinez-Belen.

The Mutya ng Pilipinas Chronicles

Thanks to Ate Dons for her excellent coverage of the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2009 at her blog – Donna Whatto Say! Unfortunately, she can’t cover the coronation night live because the “tickets and invitations people” of the event, in all their infinite wisdom, ignored the local bloggers (BatangBaler included) who serves as the only source of information for the Aurorans who are not in Baler, especially those who are abroad since the official sites,, and even are silent about the event and are not updating.
