Bukangliwayway, a Tagalog word for dawn is a collection of paintings inspired
by the images and impressions of Aurora. Through the medium of painting Jeho Bitancor
depicted facets of life familiar only to us Aurorans, who share and inhabit a particular
space and time. Unique as it is, our existence demanded careful
re-presentation and interpretation as the artist tries to weave through visual narrative a
beautiful tapestry we call Aurora. Materials had to be recollected from the
past, observed in the present and hoped for the future. The artist believes that each
strand from the fibers of our socio-cultural and politico-economic life as expressed in
art will serve as a document, a relic of the present that the future generations will hold
on to, as they seek to understand their being, a window to their
becoming. It is in this context that art, as an expression of culture and
history is of significance. To locate and connect us to our roots, to establish that sense
of identification and belonging, to instill a sense of PRIDE. For indeed, in a world of
rapid technological advancement, where ethnic origins are diminished by the influx of
western cultures, and where the world is increasingly becoming homogenous, ones
assertion of selfhood and nationhood is informed by a clear concept of IDENTITY.
