Pangea Day

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

pangeaday_1_sshot

Watch it on Saturday May 10, 18:00 GMT (Sunday May 11 @ 2:00 AM Philippines)

In 2006, filmmaker Jehane Noujaim wished for a day where people all over the world would unite through the power of film.

Now, two years later, Jehane’s wish is coming true.

Millions of people in more than 150 countries will come together this Saturday at 18:00 GMT to watch a 4-hour program of 24 short films from storytellers around the world. Films were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform and allow us to see the world through another person’s eyes.

Pangea Day films will be coupled with talks from CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Queen Noor of Jordan, child soldier Ishmael Beah, and many more.

The program will be hosted by Lisa Ling, Current TV’s Max and Jason, and June Arunga.

Pangea Day will also include live music, including performances by the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, Gilberto Gil, Rokia Traore, Mohamed Mounir and Iranian rock band Hypernova.

Think of it as a global campfire, and an opportunity to take part in a moment in history.

See you on May 10th!

Now, ‘Ready’ to get out of harm’s way

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

from inquirer.net by Tonette Orejas:

Are Filipinos ready to get out of harm’s way if and when storm surges, flash floods, landslides, ground ruptures, liquefaction or tsunamis occur?

Rather than give sweeping answers, government experts have been providing explicit information instead to help communities come up with a more localized way of dealing with nature’s violent side and ensuring the safety of lives and property.

Under Project “Ready,” also called the Hazard Mapping and Assessment for Effective Community-Based Disaster Risk Management, detailed maps are produced for every hazard that is likely to hit a province based on its natural features, active fault lines, past events and other factors.

Coming Soon: Batangbaler Video

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I’ve been toying around with the idea of creating a video version of Batangbaler. It’s basically a weekly online video about Baler and Aurora posted on a youtube channel. Hopefully, with help from some friends, we could be ready with the pilot episode in a couple of months time.

The first step in turning this plan into reality is finding a couple of kids to do the hosting job. What me and my secret partner in crime decided to do is have an audition. We’re looking for two peeps between 15 and 20 years old, based in Baler with videogenic qualities and loads of sense of humor. We will setup an audition date this month or next depending on the weather at a still undisclosed location.

This is not the official call for entries. Just watch out for the announcement on your favorite local radio stations (all 2 of them), cable TV and this website. If you can’t wait, you can email me at batangbaler at gmail dot com for early reservations.

P.S. We’re also open for sponsorships. This episode is brought to you by……

Ivan About Town and Seair is giving away 2 round-trip tickets to Baler

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I almost missed this one. Two days to go before the offer ends.

You and a friend can fly to Baler, Aurora and go surfing with two SEAIR tickets up for grabs! Ivan About Town and the SEAIR Adventure Club is giving away round-trip tickets to Baler and free surfing lessons for two to one lucky person. All you have to do is leave a comment in Summer fun in Baler and tell us why surfing is fun and why Baler is such a great place by Sunday, 3 May 2008, at 8:00 p.m.

Like the previous raffle, make sure you place your full name in the name field since you will need a valid ID to claim the tickets if you win. The winner will be drawn at random and will be notified by e-mail so make sure you double check your e-mail address before submitting your comment. Finally, one entry per IP address so only the first entry from each IP address will be counted. Tickets will be valid from now until 15 October 2008. Good luck!

Hey, maybe Batangbaler could partner with D’Liner for free trips to Baler. What do you think?

Atienza orders review of Aurora logging firm operations

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

(An old photo of a logging operation in Aurora)

This news from Tonette Orejas of inquirer.net reads like the DENR is on the side of the logging companies. Maybe it’s time to move to higher grounds.

Environment Secretary Lito Atienza ordered a review of the five-year operation plan of a logging company in northern Aurora on the heels of protests by residents and appeals by local officials, Environment Undersecretary Manuel Gerochi said on Wednesday.

“Yes we are reviewing,” Gerochi said, referring to the integrated annual operation plan of the Industries Development Corp. (IDC).

Atienza approved the renewal of IDC’s plan in June 2007, but Dinalungan Mayor Tito Tubigan and Fr. Ceferino Valenzuela of the Concerned Citizens of Dinalungan (CCD) said they learned about it only in early April.

I wonder why the Aurora-based reporters are not covering this news.
