Canada Eh

The current talk of the province is the alleged grand-scale illegal recruitment operation that was exposed with the arrest of its perpetrators, the sisters Malou Censon and Tessie Molina Villaluz and Yvonne Censon. They were arrested on Tuesday October 17 by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) from Camp Crame. They acted based on the complaints from some of the more than 100 Aurorans, mostly government employees, they recruited to work as apple pickers in Canada. They were said to have paid the alleged illegal recruiters from 10,000 to 60,000 pesos as placement fees. Vice Mayor Neliato ‘Pilot’ Bihasa, in a radio interview, estimated that the suspects could have collected up to 7 million pesos from the operation. They are now in prison, without bail, at Camp Crame and will face at least three charges including large scale illegal recruitment and estafa. The case is already filed at the Department of Justice and will have a preliminary hearing on Monday, October 23. The recruitment rose up to this scale without being suspected as malicious and illegal because the persons involved were respected personalities in the Province. Tessie Villaluz used to be a Board Member of the province and they were not previously involved in any illegal activities.

Coconut Tree

Akaw! the Batangbaler Photo Gallery is acting up again. I can upload photos but can’t place them in albums. That thing already failed me twice. This is the third time. I need a replacement. I’m currently looking for something i can integrate with this blog.

In the meantime, enjoy this photo. Three pairs of coconut trees dating at the Baler beach. Of course you can only have this view if you’re at the balcony of AMCO Beach Resort.

Eyesore

Eyesore

This is Doña Aurora Quezon’s birthplace. Its a national historical site. There’s a historical marker in front of this house. This is part of the local historical trail visited by tourists. The owner of an Internet center somewhere near the area may not know this. That red banner pointing to their location is an eyesore. Its like an unwanted popup ad in a website. That thing should be removed and placed elsewhere.

Igang - Our Favorite Firewood

Igang - Our Favorite Firewood

This is Igang, our favorite firewood. Even in this age of electric stoves and LPG gas we still need the lowly firewood to save on cooking fuel expenses. Here in Baler, the firewood of choice is Igang. This is the Rolls Royce of “panggatung“. It produces good quality fire, does not burn out easily, and could be used even when wet. Igang aka Syzygium garciae, is a tropical hardwood that is useless to loggers and furniture makers because the wood is so hard it is not suitable for lumber. It is also used to make charcoal. A bunch of Igang firewood with 3 pieces of about 2 feet of wood is sold for 5 pesos.

Reyes defers Aurora exec’s relief; Angaras irked

Monday, October 9th, 2006

from Philstar.com by Manny Galvez, published on October 8, 2006

DINGALAN, Aurora — Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Angelo Reyes has held in abeyance the relief of a controversial community environment and natural resources officer (CENRO) in this coastal town, sparking an outrage from local officials and Sen. Edgardo Angara.

The relief of Reynaldo Astudillo, this town’s CENRO officer-in-charge, has been put off indefinitely despite his alleged failure to contain illegal logging in his jurisdiction and his refusal to attend several hearings of the municipal council and the provincial board.

Astudillo was ordered relieved from his post last May 22 in DENR Special Order 2006-447 issued by Reyes. The order was signed in Reyes’ behalf by Undersecretary Teresita Samson-Castillo.
