DEPED Theater Workshop

The Department of Education-Aurora with the help of Cong. Sonny Angara conducted a 6-day Theater Arts Workshop at the Aurora National Science High School Training Hall on May 17-22, 2006. Mrs. Rosanna Querijero, Social Studies Supervisor organized the workshop. John Arcilla, award-winning actor and theater veteran facilitated the event with the help of another theater and television actor.

After six days, the participants were able to produce a play/musical that they presented during the closing ceremony. Mrs. Ilovita Mesina remarked that in all cultural presentations she saw in Aurora, this is the one that most embodied the soul and spirit of Baler and Aurora. I agree. The show was great especially the songs they composed and the way they use local Baler dialects. There are plans of expanding the play and presenting it in a bigger venue.

The picture above shows the first group depicting lives of local fishermen and their families.

Mr. Arnulfo Querijero, or Kuya Arnol, a Balerian who is now based in Dingalan gave me these great pictures. He’s in a personal quest to discover or re-discover the beauty of this town more popular in the news for illegal logging and flashfloods. Here are proofs that there’s more to this place than the Lamao Caves. This is the Laktas Falls in Brgy. Ibuna.

Basketball: Aurorans and Celebrities

Yup, that’s the title of the All-Star Basketball event held the other day (May 27) at the Juan C. Angara Sports Complex here at Baler. My first impression when I read it in a streamer more than a month ago was that it was the perfect example of “how not to name an event”. It was not catchy and required an explanation to understand. Then I noticed the first letters of the words : BAC. Then below the streamer I read that it’s a project of the Governor – BAC. Ting! The bulb lights up!

Anyway, the thing went off great and the sports complex was filled to the rafters. This was probably the only time that Baler was visited by so many showbiz personalities since Apocalypse Now thirty years ago. Proceeds from this event will go to the People and Empowerment Center for Persons with Disabilities in Aurora. Some of the stars in attendance were Christopher De Leon, Tirso Cruz III, Niño Muhlach, Bembol Roco, Onyok Velasco, and Rez Cortez.

“The other relatively active parts are found in the eastern side of northern Luzon and the vicinity of Lubang Island and Mindoro. The presence of the East Luzon Trench, Casiguran Fault and the northern segment of the Philippine Fault Zone make the areas near Dingalan Bay (in Aurora) and Casiguran Sound (in Quezon) earthquake-prone,” it said.
